Review and a Giveaway of Tabatchnick's Soup Singles

Tabatchnick's Vegetable Soup

As you can tell, I love making my own soups and testing out new recipes. But there are times when it's nice to not to plan, chop or cook where I can sit back and simply enjoy other people's soup recipes. I recently had the opportunity to take a brief break from my soup-making adventures to test out Tabatchnick's unique line of convenient Soup Singles.

A family-owned company since 1905, all soups made by Tabatchnick are created in small batches using high-quality ingredients and filtered water that are also Kosher and BPA-free. After quickly heating up the soup (I used the stove top method - but the soups can also be microwaved or heated in an oven), my vegetable soup single, made with lima beans, green beans, corn, onions, tomatoes, peas, carrots and barley, was ready in less than 10 minutes and smelled pretty incredible. As an alternative to cooking at home, the soup had a fresh and creamy taste (although there was no cream) with a rich and hearty vegetable broth. This was something completely different from canned and other frozen soups that I have tried in the past, but rather, the Tabatchnick line was enjoyable and provided a perfect portion-size for my lunch. After further inspecting the nutritional information, I was also happy to see that the line wasn't high in sodium and sugar (which many commercial soups are) and contained water and vegetables as the primary ingredients - as opposed to artificial additives, salt, and sugar.

Soup Singles also includes Minestrone Soup, Chicken Noodle Soup, Split Pea, Barley and Mushroom, Vegetarian Chili, Southwest Bean, and Tomato and Rice that are available in most grocers.

Foodie Link and Seriously Soupy's Souperbowl Winter Soup Contest

With the temps dropping into the single-digits I have definitely been taking refuge by making soups. FoodieLink, a website that focuses on healthy food, good eating and long-term sustainability and myself have paired up to sponsor a Soupbowl Winter Soup Contest. Contestants - both amateur chefs and professionals - are asked to submit their favorite soup recipe (using at least one locally-sourced ingredient) to compete in a live soup cook off at Jimmy’s No. 43 in January. Members of the FoodieLink community will have a chance to vote for their Top 10 favorite soup recipes. Contestants will then be asked to compete on January 26th in a live-judging/all-you-can-eat soup taste tasting event. The grand prize winner will be featured on FoodieLink along with exciting prizes for the second and third place soup recipes.

A quarter of the proceeds will go to the Bowery Mission, a non-profit soup kitchen in NYC.
TICKETS for this fundraiser and all-you-can-eat soup party costs $30/per person and includes bread from Orwasher’s Bakery, regional cheeses, and the chance to get to know good foodies including NYC food professionals. Soup recipes are free to enter and the top 10 contestants will attend the event for free.

To enter your soup recipe, please fill out this form on FoodieLink. To learn more about this exciting winter soup contest, please visit FoodieLink.

Fall Soup Contest!

Tell me about your favorite fall soup and you might win this book and more!
First of all, thank you to everyone that voted and supported me throughout the Project Food Blog contest. Although I didn't move on past the 2nd round, I got a lot of the short-lived competition. I cooked a soup I never thought I would (Malaysian Mutton!), experimented with new ingredients that I will use again (hello, cardamom) and defined myself as a food blogger - not to mention discovered some amazing food blogs.

With the contest over, I've been able to focus and start organizing a fall soup tasting party that I am having at Jimmy's 43 in NYC. For this one-year anniversary of soupy/taste testing event, there will be soup games, door prizes, seasonal drinks, and the chance to try four fall soups as well as instructions on how to make them. I know the three soups that I will be making, but I wanted the fourth one to be a choice by you - the reader. Please click here to take this quick survey about what your favorite fall soup is and why. The winning response will be featured on the site and at the party and receive a copy of the book "Everyday Food - Fresh Flavor Fast." Good luck - the contest closes on October 12th and results will be posted on October 13th.

The soup event will be held on October 20th in NYC- if you are interested in attending, please email me at seriouslysoupy@gmail.com.
